Brazilian Floods Expose Survivors to Waterborne Disease

INSS Agencies in Rio Grande do Sul Face Interruptions and Partial Resumptions in Service

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil, May 28, 2024 (ENS) - Over the past few weeks, the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil has been hit hard by heavy rains that caused flooding and extensive property damage. This state of affairs has affected the provision of various services to the population, including the essential services offered by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) agencies.

The situation of the INSS units in the state presents a scenario of temporary interruptions, partial resumptions, and prolonged closures. Many INSS agencies had to suspend their services due to the flooding and difficulties in staff commuting to serve the public. The affected units include Porto Alegre - Center, Porto Alegre - South, Porto Alegre - Disability Benefits, Alvorada, Canoas, Montenegro, Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande, São José do Norte, Cachoeirinha, Esteio, and Gravataí.

Despite the adversities, some units were able to resume public service on May 20, 2024, although with a reduced workforce due to the difficulties in staff commuting. The agencies that have resumed operations, albeit with partial service, are: Porto Alegre - Center, Porto Alegre - South, Porto Alegre - Disability Benefits, Alvorada, Canoas (without medical examination service), Gravataí, Guaíba (without medical examination service), Encantado (partial service), Montenegro, and Novo Hamburgo.

However, some agencies are still unable to reopen due to the structural damage caused by the floods. The units in Esteio and São José do Norte remain closed, but it is expected that service will resume in the coming days.

Certain INSS agencies, such as those in Cachoeirinha, Lajeado, São Sebastião do Caí, and São Leopoldo, are still closed and have no forecast for the resumption of service until the necessary repairs to ensure the safety and functionality of the spaces are completed.

The population can also seek INSS services through the Meu INSS website or mobile app, or by calling the INSS Contact Center toll-free at 135. It is also possible to request certain services through partner entities that have a Technical Cooperation Agreement (ACT) with the INSS for the purpose of applying for benefits and services.

In this situation of adversity, the INSS is striving to continue its mission and duty to provide and ensure social protection to the citizens of Rio Grande do Sul, maintaining its commitment to professionalism and social and environmental responsibility.

Flood Survivors at Risk of Waterborne Disease

The flooding has not only disrupted INSS services but also exposed survivors to the risk of contracting waterborne diseases. Health authorities are urging those who have come into contact with flood waters to seek medical attention, as early treatment is crucial for conditions like leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted through contact with contaminated water, soil, or infected animals. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, and vomiting, and if left untreated, can lead to more severe complications such as kidney and liver damage.

According to health officials, the availability of treatment and sufficient medication means that there is no need for flood survivors to wait and hope the symptoms will go away on their own. Seeking prompt medical care is essential to prevent the disease from worsening and potentially becoming life-threatening.

The flooding has not only disrupted essential services but also put the health and well-being of the affected population at risk. Health authorities are urging those who have been exposed to flood waters to prioritize their health and seek medical attention without delay.

As the state of Rio Grande do Sul works to recover from the devastating floods, the focus must be on ensuring that the affected communities have access to the necessary medical care and support to address the public health concerns arising from the disaster.

The INSS is also playing a crucial role in maintaining its services and providing social protection to the people of Rio Grande do Sul, despite the challenging circumstances. The agency's efforts to resume operations and find alternative channels for service delivery are commendable and demonstrate its commitment to serving the population during this difficult time.
