As the war in Ukraine continues, several European nations are stepping up their support, both militarily and financially, in response to perceived wavering commitment from the United States. From sending advanced drones to pursuing legal action to unlock frozen assets, Europe is signaling a determination to bolster Ukraine's defenses and resilience.
European Defense Initiatives Gain Momentum
Former French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe recently emphasized the need to "rethink European defense architecture" following what he described as a "betrayal" by the United States. 
Speaking on France Inter, Philippe called for a European initiative on the ground in Ukraine, highlighting the importance of European leadership in addressing the conflict.
Adding to this sentiment, military experts have proposed "Sky Shield," an air defense system for Ukraine that would operate independently of NATO. According to The Guardian, this initiative would involve 120 fighter jets from various European countries, showcasing a unified European effort to protect Ukrainian airspace.
UK Pledges Military and Financial Assistance
The United Kingdom is also playing a significant role in supporting Ukraine. The UK is set to supply Ukraine with devastating drones as part of a £30 million deal, targeting Russian forces in the Black Sea, where UAVs have already proven highly effective. 
These drones will significantly enhance Ukraine's ability to defend its territory and counter Russian aggression.
Furthermore, UK ministers are preparing to take Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich to court in an attempt to release over £2 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC. This money is intended to be used as aid for Ukraine, but disagreements over how the funds should be allocated have led to a legal standoff. "We are committed to ensuring that the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea FC are used to support the victims of the war in Ukraine," stated a government official familiar with the matter.
