Google is once again pushing the boundaries of search with the introduction of AI Mode, a dedicated AI-powered search experience. This new feature, currently available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, aims to provide users with a more comprehensive and intuitive way to explore information online.

What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is powered by Google's Gemini 2.0 model, trained to sift through vast amounts of web data and present it in an easily digestible format. It's designed to handle complex, multi-part questions and allow for follow-up queries, enabling users to delve deeper into topics of interest. According to Robby Stein, vice president of product for Google Search, the goal is to "empower people to search for anything effortlessly."
The feature utilizes a "query fan-out" technique, conducting multiple concurrent searches across diverse sources. It also leverages Google's Knowledge Graph to supplement information and provide more authoritative answers. Notably, AI Mode emphasizes source transparency, displaying website links with prominent images.

How is it different from regular search?
Early testing suggests users approach AI Mode differently than traditional search. Queries are typically longer and more complex, with follow-up questions asked more frequently. "We're seeing people bring more complicated questions to this surface and also go back and forth to clarify, learn and go deeper," explains Stein.
AI Mode also shares similarities with Google's Deep Research tool, formulating a plan before addressing a query, but delivering results in real-time.
"I think our intent for this version is to offer an experience people can use every day, on the move, and be able to get a response while they wait, relatively quickly," says Stein.
AI Overviews and Expanded Access
For those without Google One AI Premium, Google is enhancing AI Overviews. Gemini 2.0 will power AI Overviews for math and coding questions in the US, offering faster and improved responses. Google is also expanding access to AI Overviews, making it available to teens and removing the requirement to sign in to a Google account.

Shielded Email
In related news, Google is also reportedly developing a "Shielded Email" feature, mirroring Apple's "Hide My Email." This feature will allow users to conceal their email addresses when signing up for new accounts, enhancing privacy and security.
The introduction of AI Mode and Shielded Email demonstrates Google's commitment to innovation and user privacy, shaping the future of search and online interactions.
