The gift includes 130 original manuscripts, comprising dozens of letters and handwritten musical scores. “This donation is a treasure trove for music scholars,” says Dr. Elisabeth Schmidt, a researcher at the archive. “The letters and manuscripts provide a unique glimpse into the Bach family's creative process and personal lives.”
One of the highlights of the donation is a letter from Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach to Johann Nikolaus Forkel in Göttingen. The collection was originally owned by the shipping magnate and music researcher Elias N. Kulukundis.
