Meta and the Internet Society are joining forces to bridge the digital divide with a new initiative aimed at expanding affordable internet access around the globe. The Connectivity Co-Funding Initiative, unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, represents a significant step towards ensuring more people have access to the transformative power of the internet.
A $30 Million Commitment
The partners are committing a substantial $30 million investment through 2030 to fuel infrastructure development in communities often overlooked by commercial providers. This funding will not only help build the physical infrastructure needed for connectivity but also support crucial training programs. These programs are designed to empower marginalized groups with the technical skills necessary to thrive in the digital age.
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative prioritizes community-centered solutions. It also supports locally owned networks that create jobs and foster economic growth. This approach recognizes that sustainable internet access requires more than just infrastructure; it demands community ownership and empowerment.
Building on a Strong Foundation
This new initiative builds upon a long-standing partnership between Meta and the Internet Society. Their previous collaborations focused on improving internet connectivity in Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America through the development of Internet exchange points (IXPs). These IXPs are physical locations where internet providers can exchange traffic, improving network efficiency and reducing costs.
A Call for Collaboration
Meta is the first partner in this Co-Funding Initiative, and the Internet Society is actively seeking additional partners to expand the fund's reach and impact. Sally Wentworth, President and CEO of the Internet Society, emphasized the importance of collective action: "This new Connectivity Co-Funding initiative, supported by Meta, is a prime example of collective action that will help provide meaningful access to more than 2 billion people across the world with insufficient or no Internet."
Wentworth added, "It is our hope that this fund plays a pivotal role in reducing this gap and creating a more equitable digital society."
