Kindred battles past Lakers in Class B softball state tourney

JAMESTOWN - The Kindred Vikings battled their way to another win on Thursday night.

The fourth-seeded Kindred defeated the No. 5 Des Lacs-Burlington-Lewis and Clark Lakers 9-6 in the Class B softball state tournament quarterfinals at Lyle "Trapper" Lawrence Field.

Kindred has started to make a habit of bouncing back in games. The Vikings take pride in their resiliency.

"What they showed today is what championship teams do," said Kindred head coach Sam Brandt. "They bounce back and they bounce back."

Brandt credited the team's senior leadership for setting a good example and continuing to encourage the team to keep pushing forward.

"We just have so much confidence in ourselves and we have no fear," said Kindred's Elyanna Schmitz. "We have been working so hard this season that we know what to do and we can get it done."

The Vikings scored in five of the seven innings and outhit the DLBLC 11-4.

Tied at 6-6 in the sixth inning, Kindred's Mackenzie Fuxa led off with a double to left field and Jansen Jordheim followed with a single. Peyton Gette — who courtesy ran for Fuxa — scored on an RBI groundout by Avery Amerman and Schmitz drove in another runner on an infield single.

The Vikings plated four runs in the first inning. Amerman drove a two-run single into right field and Cora Johnson also had an RBI single. Leah Rolland stole home to open the scoring.

DLBLC's Zannah Bjerklie singled and scored on an error to cut the lead to 4-1 in the second inning. In the third inning, Bjerklie hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Elyssa Lindahl. Lindahl reached via an error.

Kindred made it 5-2 with Schmitz knocking an RBI single into right field in the bottom of the third.

The Lakers answered with two runs in the fourth inning. Piper Feller singled to score Mya Neshem and Logen Ystaas had an RBI double. DLBLC trailed 5-4.

Again, the Vikings answered in the bottom of the frame with Fuxa barrelling an RBI single to make it 6-4

DLBL tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth inning. The Lakers' Khyla Rosencrans scored from third on a groundout and Bjerkle touched home on a passed ball.

Kindred's Johnson was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Danica Rath worked all seven innings, granting one earned run on four hits and striking out five.

"(The team) came out there with confidence," Brandt said. "They picked themselves up and controlled the moment."

The Lakers' Ystaas finished with two hits. Bjerklie and Feller both went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sierra Yale allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out eight through six innings in the circle.

Kindred plays Velva-Drake-Anamoose in the second semifinal matchup that will begin 35 minutes after the first semifinal game. The Lakers face off against top-seeded MayPort-CG in the consolation semifinals 35 minutes after the first consolation semifinal.

The Vikings will celebrate the win for now, but know there's more work ahead.

"We're going to have so much fun tonight," Schmitz said. "Tomorrow, we're going to start fresh and have more confidence."

Aggies upset top-seeded MayPort-CG in Class B softball state tourney

JAMESTOWN - As the ball landed into Velva-Drake-Anamoose left fielder Abigail Hudkins' glove, an eruption of applause broke out that might rival the celebration at the end of the tournament.

Hudkins' catch sealed the Aggies' 2-1 upset over the top-seeded Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg Patriots in the Class B state softball tournament quarterfinals at Lyle "Trapper" Lawrence Field on Thursday afternoon.

MPCG loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles and an intentional walk, but the two-out rally fell short. VDA advanced to the semifinals against the winner of the No. 4 Kindred-Richland and No. 5 Des Lacs-Burlington matchup.

"Ever since we scored those runs, all of us were on a high," said Aggies pitcher Cienna Clemens. "We all knew that we could do it and we pushed through the whole game."

Clemens delivered a two-run triple in the third inning. The Aggies started the two-out rally with back-to-back singles from Hudkins and Emma Balas.

"It feels amazing," Clemens said of the hit.

Clemens also pieced together a solid outing in the circle. She dealt all seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Her performance on the mound came as a redemption, after Clemens struggled in the state-qualifier against Heart River in the Region 4 tournament, said VDA head coach Bryce Gutknecht.

"She's a warrior," Gutknecht said. "She grinded. She was in command of all of her pitches."

MPCG's Rylee Satrom barrelled a solo home run to right-center field for the Patriots' lone run. Satrom worked three innings of relief and held VDA scoreless on one hit with four strikeouts.

The Patriots' Raegan Zerface was 2 for 3. Danica Hanson threw four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Hanson also had two hits.

"These girls are hanging their heads right now, but we have to regroup and see what they're really made of and come back and win (Friday's) game," said Patriots head coach Kennan Konschak.

MPCG plays the loser of the Kindred-Richland and DLBCL matchup 35 minutes after the first consolation semifinals game at 11 a.m.

VDA's Kindley Peterson was 1 for 3. Natalie Nechiporenko and Fallon Hudkins both had walks.

The Aggies hope to continue the success in Friday's matchup that starts 35 minutes after the first semifinal.

"We got to be ready and set in," Clemens said.

Thompson baseball gets 14-0 win over Surrey

JAMESTOWN — The Thompson High School baseball team did not let two rain delays derail their hopes of a third straight state title as they got a 14-0 win over Surrey High School on Thursday, May 30, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The No. 1-seeded Tommies (24-1) opened the scoring in the second inning when a run scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead. Shortly after the run scored, the rain picked up and the game went into a second rain delay. The second rain delay lasted almost an hour and 45 minutes.

The rain delay did little to slow down the Tommies' offense as they added another three runs after the delay to take a 4-0 lead. The Tommies continued to push their lead out in the third as they scored five runs to push their lead out to 9-0. The biggest swing of the frame came off the bat of Drew Odenbach who hit a run-scoring triple to push the lead to what was then 6-0.

The Tommies' offensive barrage kept it up in the fourth as they tacked on another five runs to push the lead out to 14-0. The Tommies were helped by the Mustangs' (8-11) defense as three of their 14 runs were unearned. In total, the Mustangs had eight errors.
