Meryl Streep received the Honorary Golden Palm award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, marking a milestone in her illustrious career. The ceremony took place on May 14, with actress Juliette Binoche presenting Streep with the prestigious award.
«You are an international treasure,» Binoche said, praising Streep's contributions to the film industry. «You changed the way we see women in the world of cinema and also helped us see ourselves differently.»
Streep's career spans over four decades, with iconic roles in films like "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979), "Sophie's Choice" (1982), and "The Deer Hunter" (1978). Binoche highlighted these achievements, saying, «You have charted an unparalleled path in the history of cinema.»
«You changed the way we see women in the world of cinema and also helped us see ourselves differently.»
When Streep took the stage to accept her award, she humbly acknowledged the recognition, saying, «I watched Juliette's film 'In the Light' (2023) recently and cried so much that I had to go to bed.»
Streep also thanked her long-time agent, Kevin Huvane, and stylist, Roy Helland, whom she credited with creating almost every character she has played in the last half-century.
Reflecting on her first appearance at Cannes in 1988, Streep recalled feeling uncertain about her career's future. «Thirty-five years ago, when I was here for the first time, I was already a mother of three. I was about to turn 40 and thought my career was over,» she said.
However, her mother reassured her, saying, «Meryl, my love, you'll see that everything happens so quickly. So quickly.» And indeed, Streep's career continued to flourish.
The Cannes Film Festival will run until May 25, featuring a star-studded lineup of actors, directors, and models.
