Norway Keeps VAR After Grassroots Vote

Norwegian football will continue using VAR after a vote saw grassroots clubs overrule top-tier teams. The decision highlights tensions surrounding trust in the federation.

Norway Keeps VAR After Grassroots Vote

Norway will continue to use VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in its top football league, Eliteserien, after a decisive vote at the Norwegian Football Federation's (NFF) general assembly. Despite recommendations from the top two divisions to discontinue the technology, grassroots clubs swung the vote in favor of retaining VAR. The final tally was 321 votes for VAR and 129 against.

A Victory for the Federation?

The decision is being seen as a victory for the Norwegian Football Federation, but it also highlights a growing divide within Norwegian football. As one club's general manager put it, "This is no longer about VAR, but about trust in the federation."

The controversy surrounding VAR has been a long and emotive saga, causing significant ructions within the domestic game. While the top-tier clubs, who are most directly affected by VAR decisions, had already formally recommended its removal, the grassroots clubs, whose lives are barely touched by the technology, ultimately had the final say.

Skoppum IL: A Voice in the Crowd

Among the 1,700 grassroots clubs participating in the vote was Skoppum IL, a club representing a small village south of Oslo. Skoppum, like many other grassroots clubs, focuses on providing a safe and welcoming environment for young players. Their goals are modest, centered around community development and fostering a love of the game.

Clubs like Skoppum face challenges such as upgrading their artificial pitches and increasing participation among girls. Yet, they were tasked with making a decision that could have shockwaves far beyond their local communities.

The Future of VAR in Norway

The retention of VAR in Norway's Eliteserien ensures that the technology will continue to be used in the country's top flight. However, the debate surrounding its use is far from over. The vote has exposed deep divisions within Norwegian football and raised questions about the decision-making processes of the Norwegian Football Federation.

It remains to be seen how these divisions will be reconciled and what the long-term impact of this decision will be on the future of football in Norway.
