Poland is bracing for a period of unsettled weather as February draws to a close and March begins. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued a series of warnings, forecasting a mix of intense snowfall, dangerous icing, storms, and significant temperature variations across the country. Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions.

Snow and Ice Alerts
Earlier this week, IMGW issued first-level warnings for parts of the Lesser Poland and Silesian voivodeships. These alerts specifically address the risk of intense snowfall and dangerous icing conditions on roads and sidewalks. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise extreme caution in these areas.
“The combination of heavy snow and icy surfaces can create hazardous conditions,” warns a spokesperson for IMGW. “We urge everyone to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time for travel.”
Storms and Temperature Swings
The forecast for Friday, February 28, paints a picture of variable and challenging weather conditions nationwide. Expect heavy rain and snowfall, along with local storms and fog that may significantly reduce visibility. Higher elevations, particularly in the mountains, will see substantial snow accumulation. Interestingly, while southern regions may experience light frost, temperatures in the west could be noticeably warmer, even with the potential for lightning strikes.

March's Murky Mix
As March arrives, the unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue. IMGW predicts that on March 1, Poland will be influenced by a shallow low-pressure system with a wavy front. This will lead to a mixed bag of precipitation, including rain, rain mixed with snow (sleet), and snow, particularly in the foothill regions. Temperatures are forecast to range from a chilly -3°C to a relatively mild 8°C.
Prepare for unpredictable conditions at the start of the new month! Keep an eye on local forecasts and heed any warnings issued by IMGW.

The fluctuating temperatures also pose a risk of flash freezing, making travel even more treacherous. It's a good time to double-check your winter tires and keep an emergency kit in your car.
