A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Slovakia, as two young siblings, aged five and seven, lost their lives after falling through ice. The incident occurred in the village of Dačov Lom, in the district of Veľký Krtíš, located in the southern part of central Slovakia.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but sadly, the children could not be saved. Police confirmed the devastating news on Friday evening, leaving the community in mourning.

Unseasonably Warm Weather a Factor?
The tragedy occurred during a period of unseasonably warm weather in Slovakia. Recent forecasts predicted temperatures rising as high as 18 degrees Celsius, influenced by a large high-pressure system centered over Romania. Such warm temperatures can lead to the formation of unstable and dangerous ice conditions.
“The weather in our area will be influenced by warm air,” weather reports indicated, potentially contributing to the weakening of the ice that ultimately led to the children's tragic accident.
A Community in Grief
The loss of the two young siblings has deeply affected the community of Dačov Lom and the surrounding areas. Authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution around bodies of water, especially with the fluctuating temperatures. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of thin ice, particularly for young children.

Another Tragedy in Eastern Slovakia
This tragedy comes as eastern Slovakia is also grappling with the aftermath of a fatal car accident. A young driver died after a collision between a passenger car and a truck in Dlhé nad Cirochou. The man was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. These recent events have cast a shadow over the country.
Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by these devastating losses. We urge everyone to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
