Tech News Roundup: Passkeys, Hackers, and Internet Woes

Welcome to your weekly tech news roundup! This week we're covering everything from cybersecurity concerns to the latest trends in online security and internet access.

Passkeys Gaining Traction

The future of online security might just be passwordless. A new report reveals that a whopping 87% of enterprises in the US and UK are deploying, or in the process of deploying, passkeys. This move is driven by a desire to improve user experience, enhance security, and ensure compliance. Passkeys offer a more secure and user-friendly alternative to traditional passwords, reducing the risk of phishing and password-related breaches.

The research, conducted by the FIDO Alliance along with underwriters Axiad, HID, and Thales, highlights that 47% of these companies are rolling out a mix of device-bound passkeys (on physical security keys and/or cards) and passkeys that are securely synced across a user's devices.

The most common priority groups for passkey rollout are those requiring access to intellectual property (39%) and users with administrative accounts (39%). This targeted approach ensures that the most sensitive data and systems are protected by the strongest authentication methods available.

US Justice Department Charges Chinese Hackers

In a significant move to combat cybercrime, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) has announced criminal charges against 12 Chinese hackers. These individuals are accused of targeting over 100 American companies, including critical US infrastructure and the US Treasury.

Two of the hackers are allegedly involved in the 2024 US Treasury hack. The individuals have not been apprehended. The charges highlight the ongoing threat of state-sponsored hacking and the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. This action by the Justice Department sends a clear message that cyberattacks will not be tolerated.

Ontario Cancels Starlink Contract

In less positive news, Ontario has canceled its contract with Starlink, raising concerns about internet access in rural areas. It's unclear what will happen to rural customers in Ontario with one less option for internet service. This decision could leave some residents with limited or no access to reliable internet, hindering their ability to work, learn, and connect with the world.

The cancellation comes even as discussions continue about US tariffs, making the future of internet service options for rural Ontarians uncertain. The loss of Starlink as an option could significantly impact the digital divide in the region.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, these developments highlight the importance of staying informed and proactive in addressing both security threats and access challenges. Keep an eye on this space for more tech news and updates!
