US Designates Huthis as Terrorist Group

The US designates Yemen's Huthis as a foreign terrorist organization. Egypt rejects Israeli intervention in Syria and proposes a Gaza reconstruction plan.

US Designates Huthis as Terrorist Group

The United States has officially designated Yemen’s Huthi militant group as a foreign terrorist organization. This decision, following an order by former President Donald Trump, comes as the Iran-backed rebels control significant portions of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa. This move underscores ongoing concerns about regional security and the influence of certain groups.

Huthi Actions and US Response

Since the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023, the Huthis have launched missile and drone attacks targeting Israel. The US designation aims to counter and limit the group's activities, reflecting a broader strategy to address perceived security threats in the region. The designation carries significant implications, potentially impacting humanitarian aid and diplomatic efforts in Yemen.

Meanwhile, in other regional developments, Egypt has firmly rejected any Israeli justification for intervening in Syrian affairs. This stance follows recent threats made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made it clear that Egypt will not tolerate any political or military interference in Syria based on such justifications.

Egypt's Role in Gaza

Amidst these tensions, Egypt is actively involved in efforts to address the situation in the Gaza Strip. Arab leaders recently convened in Cairo to discuss an Egyptian initiative concerning Gaza, a plan that differs from previous proposals by Donald Trump. This comes at a critical time, as a truce agreement between Israel and Hamas remains stalled.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has announced a comprehensive plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip without displacing its Palestinian residents. Sisi is calling for international and regional support to ensure the success of this initiative. "We are committed to rebuilding Gaza while ensuring the safety and security of its people," Sisi stated in a recent address.

"The reconstruction effort will go ahead without forcing the residents to leave their homes, aiming to support the people of Gaza while seeking backing from global and regional partners."

Mahmoud Abbas has confirmed that, according to the Egyptian plan, the Palestinian Authority would resume its responsibilities in Gaza, from where it was expelled in 2007. The plan aims to provide stability and support to the region during the reconstruction process. The initiative focuses on ensuring that Palestinian residents are not displaced during the rebuilding efforts, emphasizing a commitment to their well-being and future.

These developments highlight the complex and interconnected nature of the political landscape in the Middle East, with the US, Egypt, Israel, and various Palestinian factions playing key roles in shaping the region's future.
