Weekend Reads: Games, Golf, and Giving Back

Looking for something to do this weekend? We've got you covered with a diverse range of entertainment news, from intriguing reads to quirky merchandise and opportunities to give back. Let's dive in!

A Gritty Future Beckons

First up, if you're looking for a new book to sink your teeth into, consider exploring titles that delve into a gritty, futuristic New York City. One such recommendation is "Warm Fusion," a story that blends biotech elements with body horror. Imagine a world where technology and the human form intertwine in unsettling ways. Sounds like a perfect weekend read for those who enjoy a bit of dark intrigue!

This fusion of genres offers a unique narrative experience, setting it apart from typical science fiction or horror stories. It's a chance to explore thought-provoking themes and immerse yourself in a vividly realized dystopian setting.

Dragon Quest Goes Golfing

In a surprising move, Square Enix has announced a new sub-brand called Dragon Quest Golf. Yes, you read that right! They're creating golf merchandise and accessories based on the beloved JRPG franchise. The initial offering? A golf ball featuring the iconic blue Slime, the first enemy many players encounter in a Dragon Quest game.

The company plans to showcase more merch at the 59th Japan Golf Fair on March 7th. While we don't know exactly what else they have in store, the possibilities are endless. Imagine a golf bag designed after a Weartiger or tees resembling an Eggsoskeleton.

Why golf? Square Enix is targeting the aging fan base of Dragon Quest, many of whom are now grandparents. And, let's face it, Japan loves golf. This isn't even the weirdest gaming-adjacent merch we've seen lately. Honda announced a "near life-size recreation of the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon" powered by their self-balancing technology. Keep an eye out for that exhibit on March 7th as well!

Give Back and Game On

Finally, if you're looking for a way to support a good cause while expanding your game library, check out the charity bundle on Itch.io curated by Necrosoft Games. For just $10, you can get over 400 games while supporting wildfire relief efforts in Southern California.

The bundle includes titles like Tunic, a Zelda-esque adventure that was one of our favorite games of 2022. You'll also find games like Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!!, SkateBird, and Octodad: Dadliest Catch. Beyond video games, the bundle includes tabletop RPGs, asset packs, books, and comics.

Organizers are aiming to raise $100,000 for CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), which provides direct monetary support to fire survivors and supports fire resilience projects. Save for processing fees, all proceeds will go to CORE. The campaign runs until March 13th, so don't miss out!

So, whether you're looking to dive into a dark and intriguing novel, hit the golf course with some Dragon Quest flair, or support a worthy cause while expanding your gaming horizons, there's something for everyone to enjoy this weekend.
