Downdetector, a website that monitors network anomalies and service outages, registered a significant spike in reports around 4:40 PM on February 18th. Nearly 70,000 reports were logged, indicating the scale of the disruption. Notably, a large number of these reports originated from Italy.

The Italian news outlet, Il Fatto Quotidiano, also reported on the WhatsApp outage, highlighting the numerous reports of problems users were experiencing. "WhatsApp down in Italy: numerous reports of problems using the application today February 28," the publication stated, reflecting the widespread frustration.

Meta's Response

WhatsApp's parent company, Meta, acknowledged the technical difficulties and assured users that the issue was being addressed. "We are aware that some people had trouble using WhatsApp," a Meta spokesperson stated. "We've resolved the issue and apologize for any inconvenience."
